NEPALI TALENTS AND INSTAGRAM : PERFECT COMBINATION

Nowadays Instagram is as addictive as Facebook was a few years back. For me, its way more habit forming than Facebook, ever! In addition, it acts as a prolific means to showcase individual talents to the outer world.
Writing about this article was a random thought process for me as I was just scrolling down my Instagram newsfeed and I just realised that there are so many people out there I can actually contact with and write about them. Then, I promised myself that I would set a specific theme and contact as many people as possible to succeed in my plan. What would be a better theme than “Nepali Talents” themselves?
(I wrote a few questions to ask to these amazing people which would help all of us to get to know them more closely. (I like to call it a mini-interview). Even though a few were quite busy with their work life, they managed to make some time for me! (Thank you all❤ ).
P.S. It took around almost 2 months to gather up anything and everything for this post!
So, I present to you my favourites who indeed possess such amazing talents; mostly, they showcase it with the aid of Instagram and have been successful in stealing and winning the hearts of thousands and thousands of Instagrammers all around the globe!
(The list is in random order!)

1. JASMINE REGMI (MUA/BEAUTY DIVA)

Jasmine, 19, is a Fine Arts student currently in Scotland and has around 13k followers on her Instagram. Apart from being a sweet, friendly and kind hearted person, she has her unique beauty and makeup style.

She has gained so much popularity within such a short span of time as she started with her official journey with makeup videos and demonstrations since the beginning of this year!
Inspiration : Since Nepalese are slowly opening up with their beauty and fashion talents, her biggest inspiration was Promise Tamang. She watches a lot of youtube bloggers to learn from them and her overall favourite artist would have to be Huda Beauty.
When asked what she loves about what she does, she answers with a simple yet truthful fact that we can transform ourselves into anyone we want. As Jasmine is an Arts student, makeup is like an art, people can use different colour palettes to show different moods.
Best compliment ever received: “You look beautiful without any makeup”. She takes it as the best confidence booster anyone can receive.
Response to haters: She hasn’t received many such hateful comments, just one or two. She straight deletes the message and instantly blocks the person so that she would not have to face him/her again. They are just not worth it. (Indeed Jasmine, there is no place for  haters, right? *High five*)
Favourite Past time: Painting and Creating Art.
Message to viewers/Fans : Keep doing what you love. I never thought I would be somewhere I am now, having so many followers and inspiring others and getting inspiration in return. Dont let haters bring you down.
Jasmine, I absolutely love the way you go with the flow with your makeup skills. I wish I could be even slightest of what you are! I guess I will have to contact you more often to actually learn how to apply mediocre makeup because honestly, I suck at it!😦

Best compliment ever received : His wife, Diipa. She always encourages and supports him with his work and he takes it as a fuel for motivation.
How do you respond to haters? : Sameer says he often receives negative comments. He believes that people’s opinion are rather one-sided and very narrow and just try to express their self-imposed limits on others. Negative comments are just an outcome of a person’s inner dark reflection. He is motivated with the fact that we just need to keep working and one day, we will be counted as their idols.
Favorite Pastime: Listening to audio books and great minds; Learning new things
Message to fans/viewers : Always try to find the new you. Your mind is the biggest treasure you will ever have and its boundaries are limited. Keep learning – you gotta love the process and not just the reward.
Sameer, indeed, is a great influence and a motivator for all the youths out there  who perfectly manages his professional as well as personal life. Many of us often tend to give up once we fail; but Sameer, takes his failure as his biggest inspiration.
Way to go Sameer!

It was just a hobby for him until the day he got a paid gig for an event hosted by the college he studied at.
He follows and admires the work of Steve Mccurry, Chase Jarvis and Trey Ratcliff. He learnt everything online and didn’t take any professional classes.

FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION : KNOWN? OR IGNORED?

I am sure many people understand the meaning right when they read the title “Female Genital Mutilation” (FGM) which is also known as female genital cutting or more commonly circumcision. Female genitals are partially or wholly removed during this procedure and it is illegal in many countries all over the world.

I was rather surprised to learn more about this tradition; it is more of a ritual and not at all related to any medical cures/treatment. Why would a female be forced into do so when it is us, females, who are provided with a natural gift of childbirth? It is a clear violation of human rights and still it is prevalent in around 27 countries especially in Africa, Asia and Middle East.

As per WHO, this procedure is carried out on females between the ages of infancy to 15 years. But, it is mostly common for women to experience mutilation between 15-49. They face severe bleeding which might even lead to on-spot death. As per CNN, just 2 days ago, an Egyptian teenager lost her life during this illegal activity of mutilation. She was just 17, I believe she had dreamt of a successful career, a man/woman who would love her unconditionally, and her children, who would grow up to be just like her. Although FGM has been counted illegal in Egypt since 2008, people strongly believe and follow the ritual.

The worst part is that there is no such religious or health reasons to conduct this act.

What are the reasons behind it?

Well, it is the elderly women themselves who force upon their upcoming generations. Anthropologist Rose Oldfield Hayes has proved this in 1975 stating that even if educated men from Sudan would discourage and refute the procedure, the women would themselves conduct it without anyone’s prior approval.

It is an obvious fact that this ritual is majorly performed where there is immense lack in reach of information. Mothers feel that it is their obligation for their children to be cut and that if not done, they would be not be counted as a part of the society. This fear, which exists within the community, has hampered the lives of young girls. Then there comes “Religion”. People are so indulged with their religious beliefs that it overcomes any other aspect of reality. Citizens of countries like Mali, Egypt; Guinea is overshadowed with the false belief that it bestows upon the religious sentiments. FMG is neither mentioned nor included in any of the religious texts.

Ever thought what happens to the girls after they go through mutilation?

They go through serious physical and mental trauma, which would haunt them for as long as it can. For some, this mutilation is performed yearly on a partial basis. This is just not done! Women already face more than required discriminations, hatred and tortures. Among all, this adds up to the top of the list.

I believe and live upon with the positivity of “Change starts with one”. Any person’s viewpoint and belief can be changed if it is for the benefit of their own. Efforts need to be put upon to make it possible for the citizens to be informed and persuaded as to how harmful this tradition is. Neither it provides any benefit to the females nor to the family or society as a whole.

Why are people still practicing this when it has been declared as an illegal act against humanity? It is because, they don’t know about it and second, they aren’t afraid to do so. Government needs to authorize strict punishments, which would scare them to death to even think about it.

A short animated story published by Women's Support project along with the Scottish Government which projects the life of Sara, a victim of FGM.

I hope we all will be able to contribute to eradicate this major issue prevalent in various parts of the globe. As change starts with one, we can at least spread the message and give it a try to make a difference.

This video projects FGM in India and also provides the experiences of women who went through FGM. (Published by Hindustan Times, Reporter: Harinder Baweja)

END FGM NOW.
SAY NO TO FGM.

A charade of an educational system

Among the vilest human creations that has hampered the development, commercialising education has to be on the top of the list.

Education is too damn expensive in Nepal. I cannot say education is totally wrong and the fact that some education is better than no education, but clearly there's a lot of business involved in schools. School fees are going ballistic. Parents should not accept how expensive education is and I’d gladly join a protest against overpriced education. It is a basic right and every student should get a chance to study for free. The government might be busy trying to focus on so many things but then we have well too many ministers who should really focus on trying to sort these things out. Children deserve quality and free education to develop our country and I don’t think we have been provided with either.

Fig: Monthly Fees of expensive Nepali schools [1]

I’d be glad if every school is free and has the same educational standards. Think of how many hours children spend travelling in buses in the metropolitan capital of Nepal which could have been put to so much better use if they’d gone to schools in walking distance. They would have peers from the same area and would be beneficial for them to involve in extra-curricular activities. Youths in Nepal waste hours in unproductive leisure time every day being involved in nothing because of which they are so prone to indulge in unnecessary activities that get them in trouble with the law.

We need to resurrect the education system. Why should so many youths have to go for college in foreign countries if the education here was decent enough? We could have experienced teachers from foreign countries in Nepal rather than many of us investing tonnes of money to get a quality education. Perhaps we don't even have the right educational facilities, but it is necessary to adopt to the world so advanced. We lose out best bright minds to countries abroad, which is a mournful thing. If an equal opportunity was provided to Nepalese children, I'm sure many unprevilaged children would get a chance to have education and would help develop our country.

As much as I think education is important, I also think schools are getting us nowhere. What I think about schools is that they should teach us all the basics so we could be skilled enough to assimilate information and express them in our own ways. We would need to teach children language, develop their communicational, analytical and logical skills, and creativity is as important but lacking because of which Nepalese children do not grow up to be innovative. Schools should clearly give out the message that education is simply not enough to develop oneself. Nepalese students could learn more from the extra-curricular activities and the internet.

Whatever I have become today has very less to do with what I learned in school and more with the ideas that came to me when I didn’t have homework or the ideas that come to me at random times when I’m lost in my own thoughts. I’ve learned more from music, books, films, documentaries and real life stories of people than from school. This education we have in our country does not make you special. I know so many people who are extremely talented and are dropouts or not so educated, for example, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg. What matters is developing your core bases like analytics and logics. I don’t need to remember all formulas by heart, I just need to know when and how to use them.

“We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control
Do dark sarcasm in the classroom, teacher leave the kids alone
Hey teachers, leave us kids alone
All in all you're just another brick in the wall”
-Pink Floyd, Another Brick in the Wall, Part II

You might have probably heard this controversial song. Besides the brilliant solo and catchy phrases, this song has a deep meaning. I am with Roger Waters on this when he says we don’t need no education because in certain cases it is thought control. Students don't perform well in school because they feel like they don’t belong in classrooms. They probably they don’t think it’s practical enough or it's simply boring. In the case of Roger Waters, he was a poet who couldn’t find his passion in the curriculum. About the title of the song another brick in the wall, it means education was yet another stumbling block adding bricks to confine him from discovering himself.

Maybe it is still not possible to have free education or change the curriculum right away, at least it could be a little less expensive. Imagine saving just Rs. 1000 every month of the child's school fees, parents could save that amount of money to buy a bicycle for their kid or invest it in their hobby. As for me, I believe in Finland's education system where teachers are very experienced but all kids do is play all day and everything they learn is out of curiosity. No exams, no labeling of which child is better than the other in terms of grades.
