Gazaab Entrepreneur Creation Challenge went Successful

Gazaab Social Ventures, a micro-social venture capital fund that seeks to alleviate poverty through social entrepreneurship, announced earlier this month the winners to its business competition held on 2-6th July 2012 in Kathmandu.

From a total of 120+ applications, 4 worthy winners emerged with their determination to make a social impact, well thought out business plans and overwhelming effort put in at the expense of sleep throughout the 5 days.

The 4 winners are:

  • Ms Sabitha Maharjan, who runs Kritipur Hosiery Industry, a knitting outfit employing more than 125 single women and supporting each of their households with extra income.  
  • Mr Ashok Kumar Dangol, who is recycling used apple pomace from juice shops to make apple brandy. He intends to help poor farmers utilize their fruit waste and make useful products such as brandy and jam, giving them an additional income source.
  • Ms Sita Tamang, who will be expanding her range of candle products to include designer candles and customized candles will also train and employ unemployed women, giving them an opportunity to earn a living. Her business also directly supports the Nepalese bee keeping industry.
  • Mr Sagar Poudyal, who is starting IPM Pest Control to tackle rampant pest problems in Kathmandu, envisions a disease free country that is safe from outbreaks such as malaria and dengue.

Gazaab Social Ventures would be working very closely with the entrepreneurs to maximize their social impact and achieve business success through providing funding and business consultancy.

Another 6 participants have also been awarded honourable mentions for their tenacity and motivation. They are:

  • Mr Kiran Rai, Bijay Dewan Rai, Bijay Gajmer – Nepal GPS Solutions
  • Ms Meena KC – Massage Centre by the visually impaired
  • Ms Shanti Shakya – Natural Dyes
  • Ms Mandevi Maharjan – Mum’ felt and cotton products
  • Ms Icchya KC – Restaurant by the visually impaired
  • Mr Keshav Parajuly – Alternative Solutions (e-waste recycling)


Gazaab Social Ventures would also be providing business consultancy service to these entrepreneurs to help get them to a stage where funding is possible.
