The Economic impact of Nepal's earthquake

Nepal is wedged between two giant economic superpowers, with homeland of largest mountain peak in the world, but it is one of the poorest countries in the world as well.

The magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck some 80km northwest of the capital Kathmandu and has affected eight million people and 8,500 peoples lost their life. And yes certainly, Nepal has to face great economic impact in time run, Corruption is rife and it is politically unstable. Nepal’s future seems uncertain.

According to +US Geological Survey the economical losses could be much as $10bn and cost of rebuilding is $5bn according to +IHS . This is the great loss for Nepal which having 40 percent unemployment rate, many people living eking out living agriculture and trading. Economic growth was already slow.

Now, here rise big questions what will be the next?

Nepal’s GDP per capita was only $694 in 2013. Earthquakes have had small effect on GDP growth and long term GDP for countries which are affected. Some economist said,
“If problem couldn't function well then there will be great loss for nation. Beside money human knowledge, transparency and well functioning government plays outstanding role”.

Nepal runs a large trade deficit and relies on tourism and remittances for foreign exchange. The Nepalese rupee, which is pegged to India’s currency, was under pressure even before the earthquake, sparking inflation.

“In every darkness, there’s a light. In every struggle, there’s a way. In every faith, there’s a hope”.

Now it’s time to act, help and grow together to bring smile in their faces. If it could be done Nepal could be much better off in 3 months and can consider in travel itineraries!

Story about the Child savior's

Our Founding initiator of +View Your Choice- तपाईको सोचाई हाम्रो रोजाई -  +Gaurav Kandel  who is also +Global Shapers, an initiative of  +World Economic Forum,  shares his experience of relief and rescue support carried out on 4th May, 2015 -

At 3:30pm, i was on my laptop working on
 ‪#‎NepalEarthquakeRelief‬ work.
Suddenly, i got a update from my Global Shapers Kathmandu Hub colleague Sneh Rajbhandari's update -
"Guys do u know of anyone who can help us with a helicopter
child in critical condition at our health post in tipine
Will only make it if he is evacuated today
if u find an option pls tell dr. tshering and also call 9851099600 my mum who is at the health post"

Sneh's mom Dr. Swaraj is our current focal point at the health post that we Global Shapers and Childreach Nepal have been working at. While, Dr Tshering Lama is a Young Global Leaders ‪#‎YGL2015‬ and Country Director of our operational partner Childreach Nepal who is originally from Helambu, Sindhupalchowk
After that update on our viber group, i posted the update on my personal facebook and started making some calls -

"URGENT - Helicopter required -
Child in critical condition at our health post in Tipine, Sindhupalchowk we are praying for his health and its an urgent request for him to be evacuated from there.
Please contact me asap @ 9803039750 if anyone has a reach to Helicopter"

With many shares, comments and likes i was called by Nirmal Tamangfrom Rapid Response Team ( @RRTnepal on twitter ) who had formed RRTNepal info centre in two hours after the Earthqauke at Biratnagar with 20 youths and with the website www.tremornepal.com to share updates.

Later finding out how he got to know about it was from ईशान's tweet who also got updated via Ashik dai's status.
Ishan tweet reads -
"ईशान @ish_aana
URGENT! Helicopter Needed
Child in Critical Condition in Tipini, Sindhupalchowk
Needs to be Hospitalized

Coming back to Nirmal ji and RRT Nepal team, who wanted details of the location and child's age and condition whom i briefed about it. He informed the Nepal Police team and also asked me to call 4211208 at Home ministry Control desk.

I called 42211208 who had called me in between after Ashik da shared me Laksmi Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs contact details who informed me that the private helicopters will start operations from tomorrow.

In between the conversation with Laksmi i was getting calls too and later this went as missed call and i found it was from 4412780 and i called back and that was Nepal Army Disaster Relief Operation Sankat Mochan | Nepal Army

Nepal Army team took some details from me of the location and the child's update and i provided Dr. Swaraj's number whom they contacted back and the rescue mission was successful.

‪#‎SankatMochan‬ team chopper rescued the child.

A moment of achievement
I salute to the team and Nepal army for their prompt action. This video shows how a little girl of 8 years old who had severe internal injury was air airlifted. It just took 2 min from the time the helicopter landed to the time it was lifted. This girl had presented to the camp at Tipeni, 10 days after her injury, sustaining severe internal injury. She was very pale and needed immediate advanced care. She was rescued to KTM within an hour from the time she was carried to the health camp.Moment captured by: Pukar Risal

A child in critical condition was rescued by NA helicopter from Tipeni, Sindhupalchowk in the evening of 4th May. Presently, the child is undergoing treatment in Birendra Military Hospital, Chhauni.

The Child was identified as Karishma Tamang, 8yrs old, daughter of Kale Tamang from Tipine Sindhupalchowk undergoing treatment at Intensive Trauma Care Unit (ITCU)  at
Birendra Military Hospital, Chhauni. Karishma was found under the rubble because of which her abdominal region had inner bleeding apparently affected identified as Peritonitis.

Personally sharing, i was in tears after i got updated and big thank you to everyone. I know so many of you have contributed and keep doing that.

Another important thing, HATS OFF to ‪Rapid Response Team  whose effort from 370 Kms away at Biratnagar made this entire rescue effort happen.
