Every year, thousands of people suffer from
foodborne illness, usually involving severe diarrhea, vomiting, stomach
cramps, as a result of eating or drinking contaminated or poisonous food. Many
attacks of unreported and it is estimated that one person in fifty will be
affected annually (EHIS). Some of these, especially the very young, the elderly
or the infirm will die.
The cost of food poisoning can be high, not only to
the country through working days lost, but also to employers and employee
engaged in food handling. The owners of premises implicated in food poisoning
will lose business and employees may lose their jobs. Food handlers who
contravene food legislation may prosecute and an outbreak of food poisoning
could cost firms responsible thousands of dollars in damage.
Food hygiene is non- ignorable part of a Healthy
life. It involves protecting food from risk of contamination, including harmful
bacteria, poisons and foreign bodies.
Hygienic food is most essential for Children to
receive all nutrients and energy needed to grow and develop at a healthy rate.
Hygienic and safe food lower risk for developing health problems during
childhood, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol,
etc.
As Adults…
Children
who eat healthy and get regular physical activity are:
1. At lower
risk of developing a chronic disease, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes
& cancer.
2. Less
likely to become overweight or obese.

Epidemiological surveillance has demonstrated a
constant increase in the prevalence of foodborne illness. Moreover, there have
been some devastating outbreaks of salmonellosis, cholera, enterohaemorrhagic,
Escherichia coli infections, hepatitis A and other diseases in both developed
and developing countries.
